Here are several decayed exterior windows, along with a door step that I repaired and re-painted for a customer in Beeston, Nottingham.
I wasn't actually aware of the rot until I started prodding about at the frames etc with a scraper.
Some windows had previously been replaced and therefore needed the standard clean, rubdown and re-paint. However, at least 2 of the decayed frames would either need replacing or restored, back to a good condition.
My customers asked if I could prolong the life of the windows and door step for another couple of years, as they didn't want the hassle of replacements any time soon.
Window Frames -
First of all I began to remove any affected areas of the frame with a 5 in 1 tool.
I then applied a generous amount of wood hardener to bind the fibres of any soft timber to provide a solid base for a 2 part filler.
A 2 part wood filler (Ronseal and Cuprinol, being my favourite) can be applied to any depth. Once the 2 parts have been mixed, you have around 10 minutes working time. The filler will dry rock hard. Any proud areas of filler can be sanded down, level with the surface.
To finish the repair, I used a fine fill called 'Toupret Exterior Wood Filler'. This provided a smooth and flat finish, ready for painting.
After a light rub down, I was then ready to prime the surface and apply 3 coats of 'Zinsser All-coat' (White). I tend to use Zinsser products as the have exceptional adhesive properties and are easy to work with.
My customers and myself were very happy with the results, and who knows, it might last longer than expected.
Door Step -
This was very badly rotten. I'm still surprised that no one had put their foot through it!
For this repair, I chiselled out the old step and completely got rid of it. I managed to find a similar sized piece of rough sawn timber, that had been thrown in a skip. I then cut it to size and screwed it in, to replace the old one.
I fine filled and sanded (mechanically) the step several times in order to gain a level surface, creating a step that you could actually stand on.

Just like the window frames, I primed and coated the step with 'Zinsser All-coat', Satin Finish.
